Book flipping.
A few weeks ago the kids and I spent a whole Sunday making flip books. We used a set of blank flipbooks which Santa had placed in our stocking in the previous year, and which had then languished, unused, in a drawer.
For a first attempt by a 6, 10 and 45 year old respectively, we were all pretty happy with our results.
Knowing what I know now, I think we’ll be upgrading to the loose leaf flipbooks for future projects (rather than the prebound) as maintaining the continuity from one page to another is easier and also allows you to use a light box to trace. It also permits you the luxury of discarding any pages, in the inevitable event on unerasable errors!
During the course of our Sunday, the kids also introduced me to the amazing YouTube channel of Andy Mation.
This video was a particular favourite….
The time and energy that goes into making these seemingly simple flipbooks is astounding.
Bead beating
I recently read the new revised edition of Marieke Eyskoot’s This is a Good Guide - for a Sustainable Lifestyle.
While the main thing I took away from this book was to do things I already do, only with more consistency, e.g.
Wash ALL clothing containing polyester is a Guppy bag (not just fleeces)
Stop eating soft/airfreighted fruit out of season (for more on the what and whuy of this see Mike Berners-Lee’s How Bad Are Bananas?)
But one of the new things I found was this free app called Beat The Microbead.
This will scan the ingredients on the back of beauty, cosmetic & hygiene products and tell you if they contain any micro-plastics. I’ve found several in our bathroom already, and swapped them out for friendlier brands.
As a bonus I also discovered my favourite jeans can get repaired for free!
A poetry of errors
Normally the sense of finding poetry in the mundane, is intended metaphorically. However Andy Wefle’s 404 Magazine intends it literally. Wefle, a UX content writer, converts the mundane content of digital interfaces, the error messages, the alerts and confirmations, and converts them into blank verse found-poetry collected in irregularly released zines.
